What is the internship program structure?
Puentes will train cohorts of approximately 10-15 students over the course of 2-3 months. Our weekly workshops cover topics including:
Language access, identity, and equity
An overview of the translation industry
Professional skills and expectations
Ethical standards and cultural sensitivity
Specialized skills (e.g. simultaneous translation)
Translation tools and CAT technology
Career pathways and further development opportunities
During the program, we will also bring in current translation professionals as guest speakers. Once the workshops are complete, students will receive:
Puentes Community Translator certification
Translation internships with local community organizations
In the last month of the program, students will have the opportunity to do a translation project for a local business or community organization to build real-world experience.
Stipended opportunities to gain experience in a professional setting
Projects focus on social impact in a variety of settings
Additional Notes:
Our curriculum is custom tailored to the specific cohort, their community, and partner organization or school input. Please note that Puentes is NOT a foreign language or ESL training program. Students will need to demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English to be eligible for the program. We will use Spanish as a focal language, but speakers of all languages are welcome (knowledge of Spanish is not required). Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Puentes will run the workshops online via video call until precautions are lifted.

We look forward to helping our talented local youth develop into the first network of NYC community translators!
